Canon introduced the Canon EOS Rebel T3i in early 2011, and it has become the flagship entry-level camera on the market today. We recently got our hands on the new EOS Rebel and we were greatly impressed with the performance of this camera for a mere $799 or so.

The features on this camera are impressive for the price. The T3i has an 18 megapixel sensor, a continuous shooting rate and a large 3-inch monitor. It also has the new DIGIC 4 image processor, with an ISO range all the way from 100 to 6400 (this can even be expanded as high as 12800, offering you tremendous photo-shooting flexibility).

The controls of the Canon Rebel are straightforward and easy to use. There is a clear control for shooting functions that include white balance, auto focus, exposure compensation, drive mode, shutter and aperture speed, ISO and a lot more. We found that the menu system on this camera is very simple and intuitive. We also liked that there are 14 automatic shooting modes with the T3i. These include creative auto, scene intelligent auto, portr4ait, landscape, close up, sports, night portrait, no flash, aperture priority and more. This Canon also gives you more user input into automatic camera modes, and we found this to be a boon for good picture taking. For example, in landscape mode, you can choose between standard, warm, vivid and intense.

We also liked the brightness and crispness of the 3 inch display. It performed well in bright sunlight. You should know that the viewfinder on this camera has 95% coverage. It means that you will see some objects in your pictures on the edges that were not shown in the viewfinder.

Our tests found that the T3i turned on fast and you can get your first shot in a second. We found that the camera would do 3.7 fps JPEG shots as long as we liked. It took .18 seconds to acquire focus with the kit 18-135mm lens, which is right about with the other cameras in this price range.

We also liked the HD video that this camera shoots. The image quality was solid. We thought that the default still shots from the T3i camera to be good. Sharpness was acceptable and the color rendition was good.

Overall, we liked the T3i a lot and we recommend it strongly. It has great image and color quality and the noise performance at higher ISOs was good. Video image quality also was good.

We think that the Canon EOS Rebel T3i is well worth your money in the entry-level DSLR market.
